Alatanheli Gr
Type Locality and Naming
Central Inner Mongolia. It was named by the No. 1 Regional Survey Party under the Inner Mongolian Geological Bureau in 1975, and was first cited publicly by the Compiling Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 1978. The naming section is located at Hanbeisumu in the Alatanheli Township of the eastern Uzhumuxin Banner of Inner Mongolia, with its reference section being located at Zhagenhua of the Chagan−Nor Township of the western Uzhumuxin Banner. Lithology and Thickness
Lower part of the group (Aqitu Fm equivalent?) is composed of yellow sandy conglomerate. Upper part consists of grey, yellow and grey-yellow sandstone (Gerile Fm equivalent?), sandy shale and carbonaceous shale (Qiha Fm equivalent?), intercalated with 20-30 layers of thin coal beds. It is 1637 m in thickness.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
No top and basal parts of the group have been found in the specific section where the group was established. To the north of the Yaojin Coal Mine the group is found to overlie unconformably the Dali−Nor Fm (=Dalinuoer Fm; Permian column 13) of the Lower Permian.
Upper contact
At the Xinalin gully in the western part of the western Uzhumuxin Banner the Alatanheli Gr is covered unconformably by the Late Jurassic volcano-sedimentary strata (Chagannouer Fm , lowest Xinganling Gr ?)
Regional extent
The group is distributed in the coal mines of Alatanheli, eastern Uzhumuxin Banner, of Erji−Nor, Shame, Shuangshan of western Uzhumuxin Banner, Chagan−Nor, Baiyin-Ulahot, Ganci Aobao of the Sunite Left Banner, as well as the coal mines to the south of the Dahekou Township and of Xilinhot of the Abahanar Banner. The thickness of the coal seams varies greatly from place to place. The thickness of the coal seams in the coal mine of the western Uzhumuxin Banner is more than 333.5 m, 1637 m in the eastern Uzhumuxin Banner, 2030 m in the area of Bayanmaodu, 87 m at the Beinaomugen of the Siziwang Banner, and 133 m at Sulun Mts.

Fossils
This group yields abundant plant fossils such as Coniopteris hymenophylloides, C. tatungensis, Cladophlebis cf. punctata, C. lobifolia, Czekanowskia rigida, Dictyophyllum sp., Ginkgo xinjinensis, G. huttoni, Phoenicopsis angustifolia, Ph. speciosa, Podozamites lanceolatus, Elatocladus manchuricus, Pityophyllum nordenskioldi, and Sphenobaiera longifolia, as well as spore-pollen fossils.
